In the world we live in today, it has become almost impossible to stay focused.
We are constantly bombarded with notification alerts, phone calls, e-mails, news stories, and the list goes on and on.
Many people believe they are masters at multi-tasking and even thrive on chaos. I used to be one of those people.
While this may be true for some, studies have shown that it is far less productive to multi-task.
When you are truly able to focus and be more present in your life, you will start to experience life in a whole new way.
You will feel more productive which in turn will make you feel happier and more successful.
You will also be able to appreciate and notice the little things that you may otherwise have not paid much attention to.
When we really slow down and learn to focus we are able to accomplish more than we could have ever imagined.
So, What Does Focusing Have to do with Your Health and Wellness?
Being able to focus and be more present on the task at hand can truly affect your mental and emotional well-being. When our brains are constantly in overdrive thinking of a million things, we forget to enjoy the moment and often feel exhausted and drained.
Here are a few key ways your health and wellness may be affected:
You Will Make Better Choices - When you are able to focus, you are in a much better mindset to make the healthier choices. If you are multi-tasking and your brain is utterly exhausted, it is much more likely that you will make worse choices when it comes to choosing healthier foods or deciding to exercise.
Be More Connected to Your Body - Focus will help you truly be in touch with your mind and body and what it truly craves. If you are able to focus it will be easier to be in tune with your hunger and fullness cues. This will help you to make choices based on what your body actually needs as opposed to letting your emotions or other factors take over.
Improve Consistency with working out and eating healthy - If your are more focused on the present moment and what you truly want out of life, it is easier to be consistent with eating healthy and working out. You will be more focused on what your body truly wants and needs in the present moment. You will be able to focus on the notion that by being consistent you will reap the most benefits.
How to Improve Your Focus
Meditate Daily - This is the absolute number 1 way to improve focus in your life. Even by meditating 5 minutes a day you can receive the benefits. Learning to calm your mind and be in tune with the present moment each and every day is a great way to exercise your ability to focus.
Yoga - Like meditation, yoga helps you to slow down, get in touch with your breath and the present moment. It can help ease your anxieties and stress which will make it much easier for you to focus. Any type of exercise can really help improve focus, but I've found that yoga is my absolute favorite because of all the benefits that come along with. That being said, do what makes you feel the best.
Be Present - A simple way to improve your focus is by being present in every single thing you do. For example, when you are brushing your teeth take the time to really be present and think about how you are brushing away the germs and cleansing your teeth for better health. Another great example is when you are eating, to just focus on the food and eating instead of texting, working or watching tv while eating. Just do one thing and practice that with every task throughout the day. (I get it - it can be SUPER hard in today's world, but the more you practice the easier it will get)
Limit Distractions - In order to really focus, you have to try to limit distractions as much as possible. If you need to write an essay, perhaps you can shut off the internet so you aren't tempted to check Facebook or have your e-mail alerts popping up while you are writing your essay. If you go out to dinner with friends, maybe you can all agree to put your cell phones on silent so you can truly be present and enjoy each others company. Find ways to limit distractions as much as possible and you will find it so much easier to focus.
Time Block - A great way to focus and really get things done is by time blocking. I love to set my phone alarm for 30 minutes to get a specific task done with no interruptions. If you block out specific times to do things in your schedule it is much easier to focus and get them done. Another example is if you wanted to make green smoothies every day, but you just struggle to find the time to do it, maybe you could block out an hour once a week to make a big batch of smoothies and that way you only have to think of it once a week and then you are set for the whole week.
Hopefully you are starting to realize how important it is to master the art of focus and how it can improve your health and wellness.
